  Max Steiner - referred to as "the father of film music"
  Dimitri Tiomkin - best known for his scores for Western films, including Duel in the Sun, Red River, High Noon, The Big Sky, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and Last Train from Gun Hill.
  Bernard Herrmann - known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, most famously Psycho; worked extensively in radio drama (composing for Orson Wells); and composed the scores for several fantasy films and many TV programs, including Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.
  Franz Waxman - His film scores include Bride of Frankenstein, Rebecca, Sunset Boulevard, A Place in the Sun, Stalag 17 among many others.
  Alfred Newman - known for his work on All About Eve (1950), How the West Was Won (1962) and V for Vendetta (2005).
  Erich Wolfgang Korngold - wrote music scores for films: His first was Reinhardt's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Captain Blood (1935), which helped boost the career of its starring newcomer, Errol Flynn & his score for Anthony Adverse (1936) won an Oscar, and was followed two years later with another Oscar for The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938).
