UNITED STATES / SWEDEN TREATY
UNITED STATES / SWEDEN TREATY
Treaty of Amity and Commerce, signed April 3, 1783.
This treaty, negotiated by Benjamin Franklin, was the first pact signed by the United States with a nation that was not already an ally in the War of Independence. Both parties recognized that its value was as much symbolic as commercial. King Gustavus III of Sweden, made an overture in April, 1782, as soon as Franklin began peace negotiations with Great Britain, wanted to be known as “the first Power not at war with England that had sought an Alliance” with America.
